Bodie Island Lighthouse
This light, with its horizontal black and white stripes, began service in 1872, succeeding two previous lights. The beacon of this 156 foot lighthouse reaches 19 miles to sea.
Cape Lookout Lighthouse
Built in 1859, the Cape Lookout Light reaches 156 feet above the cape once called the "Horrible Headlands" for its dangerous shoals. A third order Fresnel lens provides the beacon, replacing the first order one destroyed by the Confederate Army during the Civil War.
Currituck Beach Lighthouse
This red brick lighthouse in Corolla, NC began service in 1875. At 158 feet tall, its first order Fresnel lens projects its light 19 miles to sea.
Cape Hatteras Lighthouse
The current Cape Hatteras tower began its career in December, 1871. In the summer of 1999 it was moved away from the encroaching ocean. The 208 foot structure with its distinctive black and white spiral design is the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States.
Ocracoke Island Lighthouse
One of the oldest active lighthouses on the southern coast, this picturesque white tower began service in 1823.
Assateague Island Lighthouse
Its construction interrupted by the Civil War, Assateague Lighthouse went into service in 1867. This tower was fitted with a first order Fresnel lens which projected 19 miles to sea. The original lens has been replaced by a more modern one, and the original is displayed nearby.
